Pointing is the process of filling the joints between pieces of masonry, such as brickwork and stonework, with mortar.  This can also be called repointing, especially when you’re doing it to repair existing mortar.  This can be done to improve the appearance of existing mortar, or repair any damage that has been done.

As mortar is located in a somewhat vulnerable location (the outside of the building) it experiences all the weather has to throw at it, which will cause gradual degradation. In addition to this, mortal can be damaged by passing people and vehicles, incorrect mortar being used in previous pointing jobs, lack of maintenance, and general decay due to time.  This damage can create voids in the mortar, which can allow water in (such as from rain) and, depending on how deep the void is, will cause exterior or interior damage.  Damage can also be caused by the wrong mortar being used in previous pointing jobs, as well as not being maintained properly.

Before any pointing is done, it’s important an inspection is done.  This is so the extent of work can be determined, as well as determining the properties of the mortar that needs to be used in the job. It also allows for seeing if any work has done in the past.

When it comes to doing the pointing, mortar that is fine doesn’t need to be removed.  Some places do remove it, but care needs to be taken as to not damage the surrounding masonry.  This is due to the tools required to remove the mortar, as stronger ones require grinding or power tools to remove.

It’s important that the mortar added has properties that are as close to the original mortar as possible.   This includes colour, type, and strength.  This is so it blends in aesthetically, and hopefully last as long as the existing mortar.  Plus, certain types of masonry require certain types of mortar and using an incorrect type can cause damage to the masonry, necessitating more repair work to be done as well as redoing the pointing.

The length of time needed to do pointing depends on several factors.  Beyond the size of the area needing to be pointed, the depth of the work needed to be done is a big factor.  This is due to deeper voids needing more passes needed to be done, as well as each pass needs time to dry and cure before the next pass can be done.  Also, different mortars require different amounts to dry and cure.

While the above applies to any pointing job, when it comes to conservational pointing the requirements are more exacting.  This is due to needing to analyses the structure and its surrounding to make sure that the resulting pointing both fits into the building being worked on, doesn’t negatively affect the structure, and can survive the environment the building is in.

When it comes to getting your pointing done, it’s best to get experts.  They can make sure a thorough inspection is done, the work is done to a high standard and the final result is as best as it can be.

So contact Colne Valley Preservations Ltd and we can do your pointing to the highest standard and give your building the respect it deserves.
